　　Man Sues Government for Letting Him Gamble

　　A Frenchman is suing the government for not preventing him from gambling online. The man, who is an admitted gambling addict, says that the French government did not do its job in protecting him from online casinos and he is suing for €100,000 （$133,000）。

　　The man’s name has not been released, but he is identified as a 37-year-old man from Reims, France. In France, the government allows people to sign up on a voluntary ban list for gambling. Anyone who is on the list is supposed to be banned from playing at any land casino or online gambling website. The Interior Ministry is tasked with keeping track of the banned list and taking steps to keep players on there from gambling, which includes blocking them from gambling websites.

　　According to the man’s lawyer, when he registered for the opt-out list, the government made a mistake and registered him under the wrong address. According to his lawyer, that mistake “allowed him to continue playing.”

　　Under French law, online casinos and other Internet gambling sites must consult the banned list before allowing any new players to register. If the man was registered under the correct address, the online casinos would have known that he was banned when he tried to join and they would have turned him away. With the wrong address, though, they likely thought he was someone else with the same name and allowed him to access the site and gamble. The Interior Ministry has not commented on the case when asked by the AFP.
