  Annie Duke

Annie Duke - also known as Annie Legend, The Duke and The Duchess of Poker - began to play poker professionally in 1992 after deciding to drop out of school just a month before defending her PhD work in the field of psycholinguistics.

Duke's brother, Howard Lederer, was already a successful professional poker player. He helped her greatly at the start of her career, both by coaching and helping to finance her play.

Recently, Duke gained a deal of publicity for coaching actor Ben Affleck before his victory at the 2004 California State Poker Championship.

  World Series of Poker

Annie Duke's highest finish at the WSOP Main Event was 10th in 2000, just one place short of a seat at the final table. Duke was 8 months pregnant with her third child at the time!

Duke also finished 88th at the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event, placing as the second highest woman and earning over $51 000.

Duke won her first and only WSOP bracelet at the 2004 WSOP in an Omaha Hi-Lo tournament. At this series she also knocked her brother Howard out of 4 different events.

As of this year, Annie Duke holds the women's record for in-the-money finishes at the World Series of Poker, having done so 33 times.

In September 2004 Duke added to her growing reputation by winning the first World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions.

Victory in the 10-player invitational earned Duke a cool $2 million, a record for prize money paid to a female poker player in one event (this record was broken by Annette Obrestad at the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event)。

Duke is a leading light for women in poker, and now refuses to play in women's only tournaments, saying that "Poker is one of the few sports where a woman can compete on a totally equal footing with a man, so I don't understand why there's a ladies only tournament."

As of 2008, Annie Duke's total live tournament winnings exceed $3.4 million, and has also published an autobiography: How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed, and Won Millions at The World Series of Poker.
